Philadelphia Brick Pointing Expert Diagnostics

Why Brick-pointing may not be the answer!

Brickpointing, might not be the best solution if there are underlying problems, such as foundation issues or cracks, that could worsen over time. Repointing only fixes joints, so other damage could continue to spread, potentially causing the entire wall to split. In some cases, repointing can even speed up the process of cracking. 

Other reasons why brickpointing might not be the answer include:
  • Improper pointing
    Using the wrong type of mortar, rushing the process, or neglecting weather conditions can cause further damage to the brickwork. brick pointing can cause damaging techniques that can hide the true condition of the brickwork.
  • Water damage
    If water is getting into the building through flashing, gutters, or other deficiencies, repointing won’t fix the problem and could even make it worse. Before starting any repairs, it’s important to identify the source of the water and fix the underlying issue.

    Work Preformed: Brick Re-pointing  | Date Completed:  May 2020 | Problem: Old lime mix that deteriorated over time. 

    Solution – Grind out old joints and repoint mortar joints in a neat and tight manner using type “N” mortar. The joints were struck with worn pointing tools that leave a slight bevel that seals each joint from corner to corner of each brick.

    Work Performed:  Star Bolts | Date Completed:  October 2018 | Problem: Stabilized bowing wall. 

    Solution – adding star bolts to stop future movement.

    Philadelphia Navy Yard, Philadelphia PA 

    Work Performed: Brick Pointing | Date Completed:  October 2017 | Problem: Building was exposed to extreme moisture due to being on the waterfront causing mortar deterioration.

    Solution – grind out 100% and re-point using a type “N” mortar and a beveled tool leaving a brick to brick joint allowing for proper water runoff.

    Work Performed: Brick Pointing and Stucco | Date Completed:  August 2019 | Problem: recessed mortar joints due to age of the structure.

    Solution – grind out 100% and re-point using a type “N” mortar and a beveled tool leaving a brick to brick joint allowing for proper water runoff.

    Work Performed:  Star Bolts | Date Completed:  October 2017 | Problem: Bottom 5’ of home mortar deteriorating due to age.

    Solution –  Starbolt to stop future movement .

    Work Performed: Brick Pointing | Date Completed:  December 2017 | Problem: 

    Solution –  Repointed using a dyed type “N” mortar to match existing color striking the mortar with a rake-out tool to match the recessed style.
